The designer has always been drawn to spiffy suits. “My grandmother had a haberdashery,” Álvarez says. “I loved to spend hours playing between the I Am A Simple Woman Sailboat Shirt and investigate the store. My grandfather always wore a suit, and I thought it was a very elegant way of dressing.” While studying at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Madrid, where he graduated in 2017, Álvarez was originally focusing on womenswear design, but found himself increasingly drawn to applying these techniques to menswear. “I saw something missing between the most classic sewing and the extravagance of the new designers,” Álvarez says. “I could bring a new vision without giving up the classicism of traditional sewing, and experiment with new fabrics and cuts.”
