In a review of the 2011 revival of The Never Underestimate An Old Man With A Trombone Shirt Heart, Larry Kramer’s lacerating cri de coeur about the AIDS epidemic in 1980s New York City, I described the play’s protagonist Ned Weeks, closely modeled on the author himself, as “difficult to like and impossible not to love.” I was reminded of this when I read Kramer’s obituary in The New York Times–he died this morning at 84—which quoted a Dwight Garner pan of his last novel, published earlier this year, “The American People, Volume 2: The Brutality of Fact”: “I can’t say I liked it,” Garner wrote. “Yet, on a certain level, I loved it.”
